What is a Mangrove | Benefits of Mangrove trees.

What is Mangrove?

Mangroves are trees that grow in saline soils along the coast. The places where they grow are always flooded by the tides. That means, it sinks at high tide and wakes up at low tide. That is why the roots of these trees rise from the ground. Because the roots cannot breathe in case they are submerged in water. So the roots rise to the ground just to breathe. They are mainly grown in the Sunderbans of India and Bangladesh.

Why do we need mangroves?

Nowadays, almost every year, big cyclones, low pressure, etc. are coming. These can be devastating. But some of their power diminishes as they fall ashore. Dense mangroves provide a serious barrier to all these storms and for which reason, their destructive power is greatly reduced and we get little protection from their catastrophic destruction.

Also, dense mangrove forests absorb Carbon Di Oxide from the air, which makes our environment more cleaner.

This dense mangrove forest is home to a wide variety of animals. Without this mangrove, the biodiversity of the Sundarbans would be destroyed. Many people are dependent on this dense mangrove forest for their living. They will also be harmed.

Why should mangroves be protected or why shouldn't mangroves be cut?

Many people today are recklessly cutting mile-to-mile mangroves to make fish sheep. But they are not understanding that without these invaluable natural resources, it can cause huge damage to the environment and also to mankind.

All those dangerous cyclones lose some destructive power before they hit the ground. But without mangroves, these storms will strike with all their power. Which could cause a huge loss.

If mangroves do not exist or if their numbers continue to decline day by day, the “Royal Bengal Tiger” in the Sundarbans will be endangered. They will lack shelter and food. Lots of wildlife will die.

The mangroves absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide, which directly purifies the air and indirectly lowers the earth's temperature. Besides, it reduces land erosion and also contains the ecology of Sundarbans. Without these, the earth's temperature will rise further, for which reason the glaciers would melt more and the sea would increase, the ecology of Sundarbans will also be ruined. These mangroves have protected us from most of the powerful destructive cyclones that came from the Bay Of Bengal.

If this happens, all the coastal areas would be drowned. Scientists have guessed that the sea level would increase 70 centimeters before the year 2100.

Above all, mangroves are an extremely valuable natural resource. For mangroves, we are being safe from powerful destructive cyclones. It is caring for our environment. It is caring about that wildlife who lives among it. It is caring about those people who are living on it.
